Climate-Smart Sanitation Intelligence Platform for Northern Ghana ### Climate-Smart Sanitation Intelligence Platform for Northern Ghana > **"Securing the sanitation chain before floods strike."** > A low-cost, offline-first digital platform that manages the FULL sanitation chain — from containment through transport to treatment and reuse — using USSD and SMS technology that works without internet or smartphones. ## 📌 The Problem In Northern Ghana, flash floods cause toilets to overflow, contaminating water children drink. This triggers disease outbreaks and forces girls out of school. The White and Black Volta basin communities have: - No early warning system - No coordination between communities and waste collectors - High groundwater tables and fragile savannah soils ## 💡 The Solution FloodSafe WASH manages waste across the entire chain: 🚽 Containment → 🚛 Transport → 🏭 Treatment → 🌾 Reuse ## 📱 How It Works 1. Caretaker dials USSD code on any basic phone 2. Reports toilet fill level (75%, 90%, Overflowing) 3. Weather data triggers flood alert 48hrs before rain 4. Nearest waste collector receives SMS dispatch 5. Waste collected before floods contaminate the area ## 🔧 Tech Stack - **USSD/SMS:** Africa's Talking API - **Weather:** Open-Meteo API (free) - **Backend:** Node.js / Python Flask - **Database:** SQLite / PostgreSQL - **Hosting:** Render.com (free tier) ## 🎯 Impact - 🧒 Prevents waterborne disease in children - 👧 Keeps girls in school during flood season - 👷 Creates jobs for local waste collectors - 🌾 Supplies compost to local farmers ## 👥 The Team | Name | Role | |---|---| | Laarjah Jacob Yennumi | Project Lead | | [Teammate 2] | Developer | | Belinda Alo | WASH Specialist | ## 🏆 UNICEF StartupLab Challenge 2026 **Prize:** Up to GHC 110,000 | **Deadline:** May 29, 2026 #UNICEFStartupLab #WASH #NorthernGhana #ClimateResilience
