Ward-level grassland monitoring and county planning dashboard for Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs)
# Rangeland Observatory Dashboard
Rangeland Observatory Dashboard is a ward-level grassland monitoring and county planning dashboard for Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). It combines vegetation, rainfall, temperature and surface-variability observations with local resource information to support early field verification and grazing decisions.
The dashboard therefore helps users:
- identify wards where grazing condition is poor or deteriorating
- compare current conditions with the usual value for the same month
- distinguish vegetation stress from rainfall and temperature effects;
- find stronger wards within the selected county or directly across its border
- see the full multi-year climate history behind current conditions, including the documented 2020–2023 regional drought and 2023 recovery
- make use of crowd sourcing to record boreholes, animal watering points, nurseries and grass seed banks
- generate a county planning brief for evaluation
- switch the interface between English and Swahili
This is a screening tool, not a movement instruction or weather forecast. Recommendations must be checked against water availability, land tenure, conflict risk, resource ownership and local authority guidance.
## Language
The `EN / SW` toggle in the navbar switches the interface between English and Swahili — a client-side text swap (`www/i18n.js`) covering static UI chrome and the fixed vocabulary that renders dynamically (GCI classes, metric names, resource types). Ward names, dates, numbers, and compound sentences that interpolate data stay in English, as do values inside the data tables. The Swahili text is reasonably good standard Swahili but hasn't been reviewed by a native speaker — worth a pass before treating it as authoritative.
