AI-powered maize farming assistant for Ethiopian smallholder farmers — crop disease diagnosis, growth stage tracking, and audio guidance in English, Amharic, and Afaan Oromo.
# Maize Guide
An AI-powered farming assistant built for Ethiopian smallholder maize farmers, with a focus on accessibility for low-literacy users.
## Features
- **Crop disease diagnosis** — Take or upload a photo of a maize leaf and get an instant AI-powered diagnosis, including likely disease/pest, symptoms observed, and recommended action (both organic and chemical options).
- **Growth stage tracker** — Track your maize through six growth stages (planting to harvest), with practical tips for each stage.
- **Audio guidance** — Every diagnosis and tip can be read aloud, so farmers with limited literacy can still access the information.
- **Multi-language support** — Available in English, Amharic (አማርኛ), and Afaan Oromo.
## How it works
The app uses AI vision to analyze photos of maize leaves in real time and identify common diseases and pests, including fall armyworm, maize lethal necrosis, gray leaf spot, turcicum leaf blight, common rust, and maize streak virus.

## Status
This is an early-stage prototype. The diagnosis is AI-assisted and not a substitute for confirmation by a local agricultural extension worker, especially for serious or spreading problems.
## Roadmap
- [ ] Add support for other crops (teff, wheat)
- [ ] Build a labeled dataset of Ethiopian maize disease photos
- [ ] Offline support
- [ ] Partner with local extension services
