Power BI analysis of Kenya's crop surplus/deficit relative to domestic consumption using FAOSTAT data (2019-2023 ## Kenya Food Production Gap Analysis # The Question Which crops is Kenya producing at surplus vs. deficit relative to domestic consumption, and what does this reveal about food security and entrepreneurial opportunity? ## Data Source FAOSTAT Food Balance Sheet, Kenya (2019–2023) fao.org ## Methodology - Filtered FAOSTAT data to four elements: Production, Import Quantity,Export Quantity, and Domestic Supply Quantity - Calculated Surplus/Deficit = Production − Domestic Supply Quantity - Calculated Surplus/Deficit % = Surplus/Deficit ÷ Domestic Supply Quantity - Built interactive dashboard in Power BI - ## Key Findings - **Rice and Wheat show the most severe deficits** at -87% and -82% respectively — Kenya imports the vast majority of its - domestic consumption for both crops - **Tea is Kenya's only consistent surplus crop**, producing roughly 29% more than domestic consumption, with the excess - driving export earnings - **Maize, Kenya's primary food security crop, shows high volatility** — nearly balanced in good years, but swung to a -25% - deficit in 2022, likely reflecting a poor harvest season - **Beans show a quietly worsening deficit trend**, increasing every year from 2019 to 2023 - **Milk approaches near self-sufficiency**, with only a small deficit despite Kenya's large dairy sector - ## Limitations - FAOSTAT data for the most recent years sometimes has incomplete or imputed values - This analysis is at the national level only; county-level production potential was outside this project's scope - Some low-volume crop categories had missing data; analysis is focused on major staple crops - ## Files in This Repository - `Kenya_Food_Balance_Clean.xlsx` — Cleaned dataset with calculations - `[Kenya Food Production Surplus vs Deficit.pdf]` — Static export of the dashboard - ## Dashboard Preview [ ]
