Multi-tool analysis of 2022 GLOBOCAN cancer data across 8 African countries — SQL, Excel PivotTables, and Power BI, tracking incidence, mortality, and the gap between raw case counts and mortality rates by region. # Cancer Burden in Africa (2022) ## Overview A multi-tool analysis of cancer incidence, mortality, and survival across 8 African countries, using 2022 GLOBOCAN data. The same dataset was worked through in Excel (PivotTables), SQL (MySQL Workbench), and Power BI, to practice answering the same kinds of questions across different tools and cross-check that the numbers held up in each one. ## Tools Used Excel (PivotTables, charts), MySQL Workbench, Power BI Desktop ## The Dataset The raw file has one row per cancer type, per country, broken down by sex, with Country, Sub_Region, Cancer_Type, Sex, New_Cases, Deaths, Prevalence, ASR_Incidence, and ASR_Mortality as the original columns. I added three columns myself on top of that: mortality_ratio (deaths ÷ new cases), case_fatality, and survival — since the raw data only gave incidence and death counts, not how deadly each cancer actually is relative to how many people get it. Countries covered: Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, DR Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, and Egypt. Totals across the dataset: 464,120 new cases and 333,310 deaths. ## SQL Questions & Findings 1. **Which country has the highest total cancer deaths across all cancer types?** Nigeria — 63,290 deaths. This is higher than Egypt's death toll even though Egypt has more total new cases (95,700 vs. Nigeria's 84,620), which is what pushed me to look at mortality_ratio and case_fatality more closely rather than just raw case counts. 2. **Which cancer type has the highest average mortality ratio?** Liver cancer — 0.95 average. Lung (0.94) and stomach (0.92) follow closely. A ratio this high means most people diagnosed with liver cancer don't survive it. 3. **For each country, what is the single deadliest cancer type?** It's not the same cancer everywhere. Liver cancer is the top killer in Egypt (21,800 deaths), breast cancer in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya, and cervix uteri cancer in DR Congo and Tanzania.
