planning details for an AI hackathon in Nairobi, Kenya # Nairobi AI Safety Hackathon A two-day hackathon in Nairobi focused on AI safety, model evaluation, and red teaming. The event will bring together developers, ML practitioners, students, researchers, and people working in AI policy to work on practical problems involving current AI systems. ## What I'm organizing We are planning a two-day AI safety hackathon in Nairobi. The main technical focus will be red teaming and evaluating open source language models. Participants will test models under different conditions, investigate failure modes, and build simple tools or evaluations. Example areas include prompt injection, hidden instructions in context, instruction conflicts, model reliability, and automated red teaming. The event is designed around practical work. Participants will spend most of the event working in small teams and will leave with a project, experiment, evaluation, or research write-up. ## Why Nairobi / East Africa Nairobi has a large technology community, including software developers, ML practitioners, university students, researchers, and people working in technology policy. There are fewer opportunities in the region for people interested in AI safety to meet, work on technical problems, and connect with others in the field. The hackathon will provide a practical entry point for people who already have technical or research skills but have not had many opportunities to work on AI safety. We also want to learn whether there is enough local interest to support continued AI safety activities in Nairobi after the event. ## Who we're targeting The event is aimed at: * Software developers * ML engineers * Data scientists * AI researchers * Computer science students * Technical founders * Technology policy researchers Previous experience in AI safety will not be required. We expect around 40 to 60 participants, working in teams of 2 to 5 people. ## Hackathon format The event will run over two days. ### Day 1 * Registration * Introduc …
