AI-powered weather advice and crop-health diagnosis for South Africa's small-scale farmers
# 🌾 Farm Assistant
**AI-powered weather advice and crop health checks for small-scale farmers.**
Built for the TCS Sustainathon South Africa — *AI for Sustainable Food Security & Agriculture*.
## The Problem
Small-scale farmers are often the backbone of local food systems, but they rarely
have access to the tools that larger commercial farms take for granted — real-time
weather forecasting tailored to their crop, or a quick way to check what's wrong
with a struggling plant before it's too late. A single missed frost warning or
a misdiagnosed disease can wipe out a season's harvest and income.
Climate variability is making this worse: rainfall and temperature patterns are
less predictable than ever, and the gap between "the data exists" and "the
farmer can actually use it" is where a lot of preventable crop loss happens.
## The Solution
Farm Assistant closes that gap with two AI-driven tools in one simple dashboard:
1. **Weather-Based Farming Advice** — pulls a real weather forecast for the
farmer's location and asks an AI model to translate it into plain-language,
crop-specific guidance: is there a frost risk tonight? Should fertilizing
wait because of heavy rain? The farmer gets a risk level and concrete next
steps, not just a temperature number.
2. **Crop Health Check** — the farmer either uploads a photo of an affected
plant or picks from a list of common symptoms (yellowing leaves, spots,
wilting, etc). The AI identifies the most likely disease, pest, or nutrient
deficiency and suggests a treatment plan — like having a plant pathologist
on call, for free.
No specialized hardware, no expensive sensors — just a phone or laptop and an
internet connection.
