Kasasiro is Luganda for rubbish. Kasasiro Coin makes it pay to do the right thing in your own language. # Kasasiro Coin ### Turning Uganda's rubbish into rewards — verified by Gemma 4 > *"Kasasiro"* is Luganda for rubbish. **Kasasiro Coin makes it pay to do the right thing — in your own language.** Built in one day at the **Build with Gemma Hackathon** hosted by GDG on Campus Makerere (Kaggle Community Hackathon, Main Track). ## 🇺🇬 The Problem On **9 August 2024, the Kiteezi landfill**, Kampala's only dumpsite, collapsed onto surrounding homes while families slept. **35 people died** and around 1,000 were displaced. Kampala generates ~**28,000 tonnes of waste per month, but only ~40% is collected**; the rest chokes drainage channels, wetlands, and roadsides. The root cause: **waste has no visible value to the ordinary citizen.** Doing the right thing pays nothing, dumping is free, and most people were never taught how to sort or store rubbish. ## 💡 The Solution Citizens earn **Kasasiro Coins** — redeemable for airtime and mobile money — for *verified* good waste behaviour. The hard problem is *verified*: reward apps die when people cheat. **Gemma 4 is the AI verification officer.** ``` 📸 Photo of sorted waste → classical pre-checks (pHash dedupe · GPS · freshness) → Gemma 4 multimodal verdict (waste type · sort quality · kg · fraud risk) as strict JSON → Gemma function calling → award_points() → auditable SQLite ledger → eco-education tip in Luganda / Swahili / English → coins → airtime / MTN MoMo (mocked in prototype) → verified data → parish leaderboards + waste hotspot heatmap for city authorities ``` ## 🎬 See It Work | Demo | What happens | |---|---| | Genuine submission | Sorted PET photo near Wandegeya Market → GPS check passes → Gemma verdict (`sort_quality: 8`, `fraud_risk: 0.05`) → **+24 coins** → Luganda eco-tip | | Duplicate photo | Same photo resubmitted → **rejected by pHash before Gemma is even called** | | Fake / screenshot | Downloaded image → Gemma flags it (`is_real_waste_photo: false`, `fraud_risk: 0.95`) → **0 coins** | | Pa …
