They have indexed Nigerian news, scraped Nairaland, pulled from African research institutions, and absorbed decades of African public output into their infrastructure. But that data belongs to them — not to us. African builders who want to create products for Nigerian users have two options: pay western platforms for access to data about their own country, or spend months scraping, cleaning, and structuring it themselves. Either way, they are renting access to their own reality. When someone tries to build the first African language model, there is no indigenous, structured corpus to train on. They fall back on western data and end up with a model that does not understand Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba code-switching, how Nigerians actually think about money, health, land, or governance. This is the black hole. Not just missing data — missing *ownership* of data. --- ## What Grio Is Grio is Nigeria's data infrastructure. It is a continuously running system that pulls everything Nigerians generate on the internet — news, forums, research papers, legislation, court judgments, blog posts, public discussions — structures it, enriches it with AI-powered analysis, and makes it queryable through a clean API. Grio is not a news aggregator. It is not a search engine. It is not a dashboard. It is a data layer — the foundational layer that should have existed decades ago.
