🚦 Task 5 of my #ProdigyInfoTech Data Science Internship 🚦 In this task, I analyzed traffic accident data to identify patterns related to road conditions, weather, and time of day. I built a Nigeria Traffic Accident Dashboard in Power BI to visualize accident hotspots and contributing factors.
🔎 Key Insights from the Dashboard:
• FCT recorded the highest number of accidents, followed by Ogun, Nassarawa, and Kaduna-while Kaduna had the highest number of fatalities, followed by Ogun and Niger states, highlighting those states as key accident hotspots.
• Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa recorded the least crashes.
• The highest number of crashes occurred in Q4 2022, while the lowest was in Q3 2023.
• The ratio of fatalities to total crashes was 14.18% : 85.82%, indicating relatively low death rates.
• The ratio of total vehicles to special vehicles (e.g., trucks) was 72.65% : 27.35%, showing that private and commercial vehicles are involved in more accidents than special vehicles.
📚 Knowledge Gained:
—Enhanced ability to design interactive dashboards for real-world datasets using Power BI.
—Improved skills in exploratory data analysis (EDA) for accident and safety-related data.
—Learned how to interpret ratios and percentages to provide deeper insights into accident severity and vehicle involvement.
—Strengthened my understanding of geospatial and time-based accident trends, which can support decision-making for traffic management and safety policies.
This project deepened my appreciation of how data visualization and analytics can help uncover actionable insights for public safety and transport planning.
