Abstract
Densely populated urban areas are particularly vulnerable to air pollution due to the high levels of non-renewable energy production and consumption. The primary source of outdoor air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels in automobiles and factories. In Egypt, Cairo is considered one of the top 10 most polluted cities, falling into the “Unhealthy” category on the Air Quality Index, particularly in urban and industrial areas. Therefore, the overarching research question arises from an insufficient understanding of effective strategies for addressing pollution issues stemming from vehicle emissions. The integration of nanotechnology into architecture offers transformative solutions for mitigating air pollution. This study examines the most prominent methods and technologies used to reduce air pollution. The research aims to study and describe green nano materials in air purification applications in architecture and demonstrate their importance in improving the local environment. This is achieved by developing a two-part methodology: The first part includes a review of the usage of green nanomaterials, advancing air purification technologies, and applications in buildings. The second part encompasses the analysis of different research in Egypt that used different types of nanotechnology in buildings. The study yielded the need for using organic green nanomaterials in the field of exterior facade coatings and their integration with photocatalytic nanomaterials for high efficiency, multifunctionality, and sustainability.
