Mental illness remains a global health challenge, and in Africa, traditional healing systems extend beyond Western biomedical approaches. Indigenous methods emphasize holistic health, spirituality, and connectedness with community and ancestors. Practices such as herbal medicine, spiritual cleansing, divination, storytelling, and communal support aim to restore balance between mind, body, and spirit. Traditional healers play a central role in diagnosis and treatment, integrating cultural, social, and spiritual dimensions. Recognizing the value of these practices and integrating them into contemporary mental health care can promote culturally sensitive, community-centered, and holistic interventions, improving mental health outcomes across African populations.
