HEPSANET is a collaborative network which aims to improve policy and care for people living with hepatitis B in Africa. We are a group of clinicians and researchers working in sites in West, Central, East and Southern Africa, with global collaborations. We are studying chronic hepatitis B: a neglected infection of increasing public health importance because of its potential to cause liver scarring (cirrhosis) and liver cancer.Combining anonymised data collected across different sites, we are studying the characteristics of people living with HBV, how to to optimise antiviral treatment and improve outcomes, and how to deliver effective monitoring to identify those at the highest risk of complications. We have already generated outcomes that have helped to inform global guidelines for Hepatitis B treatment published by the World Health Organization in 2024. By increasing the size and scope of our dataset to represent more individuals, we hope to expand outputs that can continue to support practical changes in clinical care and policy - both for Africa and in other settings worldwide. This collection brings together some of our outputs and data. More information about our team, project sites, and other outputs can be found on our website: hepsanet.org.
