
While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected global public health and economies, evidence on its impact on urban expansion remains limited. Here we show, using high-dynamic global urban expansion mapping, that global urban areas expand by 6,722.9 km² during 2020–2022, 27% less than expected in the absence of the pandemic. This record contains the High-dynamic Global Urban Expansion Mapping (HiGUE) dataset, a monthly global urban expansion product for 2002–2022 derived from MODIS observations. The data are provided as 40° × 40° GeoTIFF tiles named according to the WGS 84 coordinates of their lower-left corners, together with a global VRT file for visualization. Numerical source data underlying the figures and tables in the associated study are also included.
