Historical land cover classification of the Lake Baringo Area (Kenya) extracted from topographic maps

This dataset includes a shapefile representing the historical land cover of the Lake Baringo are in Kenya of 1962. The data has been extracted from 6 historical topographic map sheets of 1:50,000 scale. The topographic maps were obtained from Cambridge University and were originally created and published by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS). The land cover data was extracted using a multi workflow approach that integrates deep learning-based object detection, image segmentation, and Support Vector Machine classification. Nine land cover classes were extracted and assembled into a coherent polygon dataset. The resulting land cover map of 1962 provides a comprehensive digital reconstruction of mid- 20th century landscape conditions in Baringo County, offering a valuable baseline for long term environmental and socio ecological analyses.
