How terrorist violence in Burkina Faso affects household dietary diversity

In Burkina Faso, the number and intensity of terrorist incidents, i.e. the number of fatalities related to terrorism, increased markedly between 2015 and 2019. This is a highly detrimental development for household dietary diversity. By combining panel survey data for farming households in Burkina Faso with spatial conflict data, we demonstrate that it was the intensity of terrorism in a given commune that specifically decreased the Food Consumption Score (FCS) of households in that commune, rather than the frequency of incidents. Further analysis suggests the mechanisms by which the intensity of terrorism affects dietary diversity: As terrorist-related fatalities increased, farm households' income (particularly agricultural income), their output of staple crops, and household food expenditure all decreased.
