Humanitarianism is Samafal

This chapter focuses on the Somali concept of samafal which translates to humanitarianism. Samafal can also mean charity, philanthropy, and responding to others' needs. However, the term can invoke both definitions in line with sentimentality and politics. The concept is a prevalent but dynamic cultural feature in Somali communities, thus it exists both within and outside the bounds of international relief operations. Additionally, the chapter includes that Somalis' dependence on and love for mobility enable the kinds of moral experience and job opportunities provided by the relief industry. It highlights that samafal is key to global humanitarianism.
