Impact of graduation programming on asset accumulation among Tanzania’s productive social safety net beneficiary households

Persistent poverty in sub-Saharan Africa is closely tied to limited ownership of productive assets, yet evidence on the productive returns of social safety net graduation components remains mixed. This study assesses the impact of graduation programming on household asset accumulation among beneficiaries of Tanzania's Productive Social Safety Net. Using a quasi-experimental design, 400 households (160 treatment, 240 control) were randomly sampled across four councils. Propensity Score Matching with regression analysis on log-transformed assets revealed graduation programming significantly increased asset values by 128.4 percent (β=0.826, p=0.009). Findings justify expanding, tailoring, and sustainably financing integrated cash-plus interventions within national social protection systems.
