IMPACT OF GULLY EROSION ON LIVELIHOOD IN NASARAWA SOUTH, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA

This study examines impact of gully erosion on livelihood in Nasarawa South, Nasarawa State, Nigeria (2015-2025). The study was built within the framework of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). Data for the study were generated from both primary and secondary sources. Key Informant Interview and questionnaire were employed as instruments for primary data, while for secondary method, sources like research papers, policy papers, documents, journals, magazines, seminars, workshop papers and handbook were utilized. The study observed that the socio-economic activities affected by gulling include; farming, trading, craft work, hunting, among others. Gullies control measures based on interview and questionnaires revealed that sandbag filling, broken stone embankment, planting of trees and grasses are the major practice that have been imbibed by the community in their bid to combat the gully erosion The study recommended that the government at all levels in Nigeria should take it as matter of urgency to yield to addressing issues relating to erosion especially gully erosion at an early stage so as to avoid loss of lives of Nigerian people and their properties. The government can achieve this through formulation of bye laws and policies that will act as a guide to the use and misuse of land uses.
