Impacts of Urban Agriculture on Environment: In Case of Tora town, Silte Zone, Central Ethiopia.

ABSTRACT Urban agriculture plays a great role in bringing environmental benefits to urban farmers in particular and urban dwellers at large, helping to grasp the significance of the sector for urban environments. It is also a key driver of positive change, offering opportunities for enhancing environmental sustainability and fostering a harmonious relationship between urban development and ecosystem health. So, the study aimed to assess the impacts of urban agriculture on the environment in Tora town, Silte Zone, Central Ethiopia. Basically, the study employed a descriptive research type. Mixed research approach, combining quantitative and qualitative method was used; both primary and secondary sources of data were collected. And 204 samples were systematically selected from the two selected kebeles. Ten key informants were selected through purposive sampling from relevant institutions and urban farmer experts. The study revealed that 41.2% of urban residential households were engaged in farming, 20.6% were in the service sector, 32.5% were involved in trading, and 14.7% had other unspecified occupations.The findings underscored the positive impacts of urban agriculture on the environment, including sustainable waste management practices, organic waste utilization, and the adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques. Challenges such as water related challenges and sustainable waste disposal were also identified, indicating the need for comprehensive solutions to address environmental concerns associated with urban agriculture. From the study, it is concluded that there is a need for more comprehensive studies to address the gaps in knowledge and enhance the sustainability of urban agriculture practices in the study area. It is recommended to address the challenges identified in urban agriculture practices in the town through targeted interventions, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and leverage opportunities to enhance the positive impacts of urban agriculture on the environment. It is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders in the town to prioritize the development and implementation of comprehensive urban agriculture policies that support sustainable practices and address challenges.
