Indigenous Strategies for Managing Food Shortages and Household Food Security in Pre-colonial Igbo land

Abstract: This study examines indigenous strategies for managing food shortages and sustaining household food security in pre-colonial Igboland. It focuses on the ways Igbo communities responded to seasonal food scarcity, crop failures, environmental uncertainties, and periods of inadequate food supply before colonial intervention. Methodologically, the study adopts a historical research design, relying primarily on qualitative analysis of oral traditions, archival materials, published scholarly works, ethnographic accounts, and relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal that pre-colonial Igbo households employed a combination of indigenous strategies, including crop diversification, food preservation and storage, cultivation of famine-resistant crops, reliance on wild and alternative food resources, inter-community exchange, local markets, kinship networks, communal support systems, and seasonal adjustments in agricultural production. These practices reduced household vulnerability and helped communities cope with temporary food shortages. The study further finds that indigenous institutions and social relationships were important mechanisms for distributing food and supporting vulnerable households during periods of scarcity. The study suggests that greater scholarly attention should be given to indigenous food-security practices as valuable historical knowledge. It also recommends documenting surviving indigenous strategies and integrating appropriate traditional knowledge with contemporary approaches to sustainable agriculture, food preservation, community resilience, and household food security in Nigeria.
