Over the last decade or so I have had first‐hand experience of sixty LIS (library and information science) schools or programmes in twenty countries, from Botswana to Brazil; from Morocco to Malaysia. This paper describes my impressions of recent and current developments in the teaching of information studies/science internationally. It is not, however, based on the results of any kind of field survey or systematic comparison of curricula and courses, and my remarks should therefore be treated with caution. These impressions have been garnered through on‐site visits, whether for the purpose of teaching, acting as external examiner, conducting research or undertaking consultancy assignments.
