Integrated Indigenous and Contemporary Peacebuilding Initiative: An Ownviewist Analysis of Multicultural Harmony Dynamics in Moyale District and Beyond

This study examines the intersection of indigenous wisdom and contemporary peacebuilding strategies in Moyale District, Ethiopia, using an Ownviewist perspective to explore how community perceptions, cultural norms, and institutional frameworks shape conflict and peace dynamics. Drawing on Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and participatory observation, the research investigates the peacebuilding practices of Gabra, Borana, and Garri communities, including the Gadaa system, Abba Dheeda, and ceremonial rituals such as Jalalaa and Madaa. The study highlights the transformative potential of integrating traditional dispute resolution mechanisms with formal justice systems, emphasizing dialogue, consensus-building, restorative justice, and environmental stewardship. The Ownviewist lens foregrounds cognitive-emotional perceptions, revealing how internalized norms and cultural scripts affect the efficacy of peace initiatives. Key contributions include actionable recommendations for policy, program design, and sustainable multicultural peace interventions. The findings have relevance beyond Moyale District, offering a framework for inclusive, culturally grounded, and resilient peacebuilding in diverse regions worldwide.
