This study explores the integration of smart grid technology as a solution to the persistent
energy crises in Nigeria. The aim is to evaluate the feasibility of transitioning from traditional
aging infrastructure to a modernized smart grid to enhance operational reliability and
efficiency. The scope covers the current challenges of the Nigerian power sector, including
high technical losses and inadequate generation. The methodology employed a qualitative
research design involving a systematic literature review, stakeholder interviews with
regulatory officials, and analysis of pilot smart grid projects. Data collection was derived from
industry reports, academic publications, and real-world performance metrics from distribution
companies (DisCos). Findings indicate that implementing Advanced Metering Infrastructure
(AMI) can reduce technical losses by up to 15% and increase revenue collection by 25%.
However, high upfront costs and a lack of local technical expertise remain significant barriers.
The study concludes that a phased implementation approach is vital for long-term success. It
is recommended that the Nigerian government establish a robust regulatory framework and
prioritize public-private partnerships to bridge the funding and infrastructure gaps.
