International Migration from Nigeria: Determinants and Implications for Economic Development

International migration is the movement of people across international borders for the purpose of settlement. Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation has witnessed significant international migration in recent decades driven by various factors, such as economic opportunity, social and political factors, environmental and climate factors but to mention a view. The objective of the study is to examine the leading causes, consequences and implications of Nigerians migrating abroad. Mixed-methods approach was employed for the study which include secondary data analysis, in-person and online interviews and survey research. A structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Through the purposive sampling technique, the opinion of fifty (50) respondents were obtained on the causes and effects of international migration out of Nigeria. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was utilized for the data analysis. From the research it was revealed among others that the push and pull factors are the principal causes of international migration out of Nigeria. Part of recommendations given was that government should manage international migration for development and also make labour migration an explicit part of their development strategy.
