Introducing Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) to Improve Maternal Nutrition and Birth Outcomes in Ethiopia

Improving nutrition among women of reproductive age, especially during pregnancy, is vital to a healthy pregnancy, birth outcomes, and early child survival. Based on existing global evidence, the use of multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) in pregnancy has been included into the revised National Adolescent, Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (AMIYCN), Antenatal Care (ANC) and the National Micronutrient Prevention and Control guidelines in Ethiopia, but there is still a need to demonstrate sustainable scale-up of MMS in the country. This article presents key features of and considerations for the demonstration program to roll-out of MMS in selected woredas in Ethiopia and closely mirrors the implementation of MMS.
