Investigating determinants of suicidal ideation among university students: The role of social work interventions

Suicide is a leading global cause of death, with university students particularly vulnerable due to developmental and psychological changes. This study, using a mixed-methods design, explored factors contributing to suicidal ideation among students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). A total of 200 students (81 males, 109 females) were surveyed using structured questionnaires, and 16 students eight males and eight females participated in in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS, while interview data were transcribed verbatim for accuracy, and transcripts were reviewed to identify key themes. The findings revealed that poor academic performance, loneliness, and financial difficulties were major contributors to suicidal thoughts. Based on these results, the study recommends expanding university counseling services, incorporating social work professionals for targeted interventions, and advocating for comprehensive mental health policies by policymakers.
