Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health challenge, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common bacterial pathogen associated with AMR and is of particular concern in this region. The proposed work aims to investigate how the prevalence of AMR in Klebsiella pneumoniae has evolved in sub-Saharan Africa over the past 5 years, and what genotypic data can tell us about its future trajectory. By focusing on Klebsiella pneumoniae, the proposed work brings specificity to the investigation and can potentially identify new targets for intervention. While there have been studies on AMR in sub-Saharan Africa, the proposed work is unique in its focus on Klebsiella pneumoniae and its use of genotypic data. This originality adds depth and specificity to the investigation, and the findings could potentially be applicable to other regions of sub-Saharan Africa and other bacterial pathogens with similar AMR profiles. The proposed work has the potential to make a significant impact on the field of AMR by informing policy decisions and guiding the development of more effective antimicrobial therapies.
