Isolation, Identification and Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile of Staphylococcus aureus Obtained from Wounds: Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos

This collaborative research investigated the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from wound infections at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. The study aimed to characterize S. aureus isolates and evaluate their resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics in order to support evidence-based antimicrobial therapy and infection control practices.

A total of 37 wound samples were collected and cultured on Mannitol Salt Agar. Bacterial isolates were identified using standard microbiological and biochemical techniques, including the DNase test, followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method.

The study found that S. aureus constituted a substantial proportion of the bacterial isolates recovered from wound infections. The isolates exhibited high levels of resistance to antibiotics such as amoxicillin and ampiclox, while demonstrating susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, gentamicin, and co-trimoxazole. These findings highlight the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance and emphasize the need for antibiotic stewardship, routine susceptibility testing, and strengthened infection prevention measures in healthcare settings.
