The recording at the center of this item is a shield song. Its composer is Daak Otong from Nyijwado Village in Tonga District. He was serving in the army in Doleib Hill, where he married the daughter of Aryal Gidbek in Paju. He made this song when he was still in Doleib Hill. The performer is a friend and colleague to the composer. The two are still in the army but Daak Otong is not in Juba, but we were able to call him on the phone. He gave permission to archive this song sung by his dear friend Johnson Otor. In this song, the composer says that he is from a family of fighters who do not fear. And he tells how he got his shield. And that his wife was always ready to hand him the shield when a war cry is heard. And when he takes the shield, he sings his shield song making those who do not have shields very angry. This item consists of a recorded Shilluk song (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, translation, and comments.
