Joireman High Court, Ethiopia, 1947-1974 Version 1

This data set consists of archival records collected from the Shoa High Court in Ethiopia in order to better understand the country's tenure system as well as the position and intentions of the Ethiopian imperial government. This data set is problematic, however, as by 1967 the jurisdiction of the court had changed from being a court of appeal for the country as a whole to a court of appeal for Shoa alone. Thus the data are not consistent across time. However, for most of the cases there is a complete summary of the dispute, which is a valuable record. The purpose of this study is to better understand the country's tenure system as well as the position and intentions of the Ethiopian imperial government. Archival records were collected from the Shoa High Court in Ethiopia. The researcher took a standard random sampling of every twenty-fifth case from all of the Shoa High Court cases from 1947, 1957, 1967 and 1974. This study consists of 10 PDF files. High-Court-66--a-.pdf, High-Court-66--b-.pdf, and High-Court-66--c-.pdf include scanned court records. High-Court-1959-a-.pdf, High-Court-1959-b-.pdf, High-Court-1959-c-.pdf, and High-Court-1959-d-.pdf are notes from the PI on different court cases. High-Court-case-list.pdf lists names of plaintiffs and their associated court case number and the geographic origin of the case. A standard random sampling of every twenty-fifth case was collected of all of the Shoa High Court cases from 1947, 1957, 1967 and 1974. A total of 412 cases were collected. Note: The Ethiopian calendar is distinct from the Gregorian calendar, which is utilized in the United States. Thus, the years noted above represent the sample years according to the Gregorian calendar. The calendar utilized for the data collection, however, was the Ethiopian calendar. Thus, the sample was taken from the years 1939, 1949, 1959, and 1966 according to the Ethiopian calendar and these are the years that appear on the data submitted.
