This dataset compiles publicly documented incidents affecting journalists in Ethiopia between 1992 and 2024. Each record represents a verified coercive action—such as arrest, prosecution, attack, abduction, harassment, killing, exile, licensing restriction, or outlet closure—gleaned from archival sources including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), and IFEX. Records were de-duplicated across sources, normalized by date and outlet, and coded to a predeclared typology. The resulting corpus enables longitudinal analysis of risk trends across two political eras (EPRDF 1992–2018 and Prosperity Party 2019–2024). The dataset underpins the paper Journalist Safety in Ethiopia (1992–2024):Counting Coercion: Incidents, Experiences, and a Four-Coordinate Framework for Journalist Risk This dataset was assembled using Python scraping scripts to harvest incident reports from publicly available archival sources (CPJ, RSF, IFEX), followed by manual verification and de-duplication. Each event is normalized (date, outlet, action type, actor) and coded to a predefined typology (arrest/detention; prosecution; attack; abduction; harassment; killing; exile; licensing/closure/bans). Records include stable source URLs and record-level IDs for reproducibility. Data are provided as CSV with a separate codebook. No interview or PII data are included. Users should cite this dataset when reproducing or extending the analysis.
