Judgment of Climate Hypocrisy and People's Climate Change Mitigation Support in a South African sample

We study people's judgment of hypocrisy in the context of climate change mitigation efforts. We hypothesize that climate hypocrisy is condemned more harshly than mere climate transgression, which we call the 'Climate Hypocrisy Penalty'. Moreover, we predict that people's level of support for climate change mitigation moderates this penalty: among people with lower levels of support the penalty is stronger whereas the higher the support, the distinction between climate hypocrisy and climate transgression condemnation dissipates. We have confirmed these hypotheses with US samples and now aim to replicate them in a South African sample.
