Language Revitalization and Cultural Identity in East African Societies: An Arab Perspective

Language revitalization efforts in East Africa have gained attention due to their potential impact on cultural identity and societal cohesion. The study employs a comparative approach, analysing qualitative data from various sources including interviews with local artists and linguistic experts, as well as archival material related to language policies and their outcomes. A notable finding is the significant role that Arabic dialects play in preserving cultural identity among East African communities, particularly in Egypt where multiple languages coexist within a shared Arab cultural sphere. Language revitalization projects can serve as catalysts for fostering cultural pride and artistic innovation, albeit with challenges related to linguistic diversity and societal acceptance. Policy makers should consider the importance of local dialects in language revitalization strategies, while also promoting cross-cultural understanding and dialogue among diverse linguistic groups.
