The informal sector, popularly known in Kenya as jua kali, is a major source of employment, livelihood and occupational skill formation. However, the processes through which technical knowledge is acquired, organised, renewed, codified, shared and transferred within the sector remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the acquisition of technical skills in Kenya’s informal sector, using motor vehicle mechanics in Nairobi as a case.
