Abstract The African continent is home to over a thousand languages, many of which are unwritten and most of which are underdescribed. Learners and instructors of these languages – indeed of any underdescribed language – must think and operate well beyond the methodologies and organization of the better‐resourced and more‐established language programs in the US.
