Local Context, Social Norms and Civic Participation. A Fieldexperiment in Tunisia

This research proposal aims to examine the effects of the local social context and social norms and ties on the civic participation of low-income individuals. It looks at collective environmental action in Tunisia as a case study. In this study, I rely on a field experiment that is designed to manipulate social pressure by neighbours versus community outsiders and additional survey data to investigate what is driving community participation among Tunisian citizens. The study also allows to compare the behavior and attitudes of poor and wealthy citizens living in different neighbourhoods in Tunis.
