The slave trade began with the heads of some states African and mercantilist Arab, only later joined the European slavetrade. When it refers to states, does not mean the current political division. The states where not structured, which wasnot allowing the creation of a real economic base. The African peolple were lack of extensive scientifi c knowledge,but they had the notion of the boundaries of their territories. The purpose of this article is to describe the slave trade in Africa during the period between 1440 and 1870, using historical maps, the information on the regions where theslave trade was more intense, the routes used, the enslaved African peoples destination, and how the native chiefs andEuropean employees contributed to the slave trade. The maritime navigation used by European powers in the Pacifi c,Atlantic and Indian oceans and in the Mediterranean was of great importance for the knowledge and exploitation ofthe African continent. It was the basis for the humiliation of the African people through slavery. The Historical Cartography is an important element for the understanding of the origin and the destiny of the traded African people aswell as the routes used.
