Media coverage of conflicts: An analysis of media framing of the Cameroon ambazonian crisis

Abstract The Anglophone crisis refers to a power struggle between the government military forces and the Ambazonia defense forces representing the two Anglophone-speaking regions of Cameroon. This qualitative framing analysis looks at the geopolitics of the crisis through the prism of popular news discourses. Framing analysis is used to examine frames from eight English and French news sources. Seven hundred articles with in-depth coverage of the crisis are chosen using a systematic random sample. News stories are coded and assessed using Nvivo. Three main frames emerged from the investigation: the impact, the violence, and the peace and unity frame. The Sun, 237 Online, The Post, and Eden Newspaper disclosed the crisis violence, Cameroon Tribune, La Voix du Centre, and Bamenda Online relied on the government's peace and unity measures while Ecomatin Newspaper focused on how the crisis affected the nation's economy. The ramifications and future avenues of research are examined.
