Mekelle Heritage Map: Tangible, Intangible, and Natural Assets ካርታ ሓድግታት መቐለ-- ዝድህሰሱ፣ ዘይድህሰሱን ተፈጥሮኣዊን

This document presents the integrated heritage map of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia. It was produced as a semester project in the graduate-level course Urban Heritage Conservation at Mekelle University, under the supervision of the course instructor. The work consolidates spatial and descriptive data on the city’s tangible (historic churches, vernacular housing clusters, Italian-era public buildings, and markets) , intangible (traditional festivals, oral narratives, artisanal knowledge, and religious practices), and natural heritage (sacred trees, springs, and culturally significant topographic features) through a combination of fieldwork, community engagement, and documentary research. Beyond mapping, the project aimed to introduce students to methods of heritage inventory, landscape-based analysis, and community-informed documentation, particularly within the context of post-conflict urban resilience. This publicly accessible map offers an initial reference for future conservation planning and scholarly engagement with Mekelle’s urban heritage landscape.
