This is where you can find compiled versions of the MESA tool for Windows 11. The current version number is 5.0 beta 2025.12.26. MESA supports geoprocessing for delivering a sensitivity analysis according to the MESA method. This is a replacement of all former versions of MESA.

The distribution comes with processed data so that visualisation and reporting tools can be used outright.

Unzip and run the mesa.exe program. No install needed. Test data for MAfia island in Tanzania is included.

What’s new in MESA 5.0

MESA 5.0 (beta) is a usability and reliability-focused update of the Windows desktop workflow. The main theme is a clearer end-to-end pipeline (Workflows → Status → deliverables), fewer “modes”, and safer day-to-day operations for teams.

This page summarises the user-visible changes that landed during 2025 development. Remember this is a work in progress and that the developed code is based on back office methods development.

Highlights

A clearer launcher workflow

The desktop launcher now organises tasks into four phases on the Workflows tab:

  • Prepare data (step 1) – bring inputs into the project (area assets, geocodes, line assets, atlas tiles)
  • Configure processing (step 2) – adjust processing parameters and project metadata (processing parameters, analysis design, edit assets, edit atlas)
  • Run processing (step 3) – run the heavy computation (process area, process line, process area analysis, optional raster tiles)
  • Review & publish (step 4) – open viewers and export deliverables (asset map, analysis map, compare study areas, report engine)

This replaces older layouts where important tools were split across Settings or duplicated across multiple entry points.

Report engine: Word-first and simpler

The report engine now focuses on exporting a Word report (.docx) under output/reports/.

  • PDF export from the report engine has been removed.
  • Reporting is aligned around a single geocode basis (basic_mosaic) to reduce configuration complexity.
  • Line reporting has been strengthened (overview + per-line detail pages) with improved map layout so figures stay on one page.
  • Inset maps use consistent styling (border/shadow), and the styling knobs are configurable via config.ini.

If you need printable map layouts, the recommended route is still the QGIS project under qgis/.

Backup / restore utility

A dedicated Backup / restore tool is available from the Settings tab.

  • Creates a ZIP backup of input/, output/, and config.ini.
  • Lists existing backups and restores from a selected ZIP.
  • Restore is explicitly destructive (current data are replaced), with a clear warning and progress indication.

Status and monitoring

The Status tab is designed for lightweight monitoring (counters, timestamps, links) and avoids heavy IO during startup. It refreshes when selected so opening the app stays fast.
