Metabolomics as a Driver of Medicinal Plant Industry and Agriculture: Tools, Trends, and Transformative Potential in Africa

Despite the known importance of geographic and environmental influence on the accumulation of metabolism in plants, a comprehensive synthesis of regional variation, especially linking these data to cultivation decisions, remains lacking. This review addresses this gap by systematically collating global and African research on spatial metabolite and mineral variation in medicinal plants and discussing how such knowledge can guide precision cultivation strategies to improve quality and efficacy. For example, such insight could reveal that Azadirachta indica grown in Accra, Ghana, has superior phytochemical profiles compared to those grown in Kumasi, leading farmers to prioritize cultivation in Accra or traditional healers to prefer sourcing from that region. By integrating phytochemical, elemental, and environmental insights, it bridges traditional ethnobotanical knowledge with modern scientific principles, fostering sustainable, high-quality medicinal plant cultivation that benefits health, biodiversity, and socio-economic development.
