Middle verbs in Maa: Alternating, media tantum, and (spurious) look-alikes

Based on semantics, morphophonology, morphosyntax, and some diachronic evidence, this study distinguishes four types of Maa (Maasai) verbs that might initiallyappear to be middle forms: those which alternate with simple transitive stems, non-alternating middles (sometimes called media tantum in the literature), verbs partially assimilated to the media tantum category, and spurious “look-alikes.” Compared to alternating middles, a greater proportion of media tantum verbs expresshuman related or human experience concepts. The study sets the stage to understand how irregularities in a system may arise. The investigation is based on textand lexicography materials, collected collaboratively with native speakers.
