Military Expenditure and the Security-Poverty Cycle in Sub-Saharan Africa A Comparative Analysis of Resource-Rich and Conflict-Affected States (2014–2023)

This dataset supports the article "Military Expenditure and the Security-Poverty Cycle in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Comparative Analysis of Resource-Rich and Conflict-Affected States (2014–2023)" (submitted to African Security, Taylor & Francis). The workbook compiles and organises military expenditure, natural resource rent, conflict/threat, arms transfer, and governance-integrity indicators for six purposively selected Sub-Saharan African states — Nigeria, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Kenya, and Senegal — covering the period 2014–2023. It contains seven sheets: (1) README with variable definitions and source notes; (2) Military Expenditure, annual USD figures by state; (3) Resource Rents, natural resource rent data used to test the resource curse pathway; (4) Threats and GDI, conflict fatality counts alongside Government Defence Integrity Index scores; (5) Arms Suppliers, major supplier shares 2019–2023; (6) GDI Risk Areas, disaggregated governance risk scores; and (7) Summary Statistics, descriptive statistics underlying the paper's tables and figures. Source data are drawn from the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database, the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, the Government Defence Integrity Index (Transparency International Defence & Security, 2025), and the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED). All underlying source data are publicly available; this dataset represents the author's compiled, cleaned, and structured version used directly in the statistical analysis and figures reported in the article.
