Mothers' Views of Children’s Rights in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the UK

This study will examine whether there is a difference in the endorsement of children’s nurturance and self-determination rights in mothers of children aged 8 to 14 years. We will also examine the predictors of these endorsements, which will include country, parents’ allocentricism (the degree to which the family is central more than an individual), and parenting styles. In the UK, we expect that mothers will extend more nurturance than self-determination rights to children under 11, but mothers will extend both types to older children. In contrast, in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, we expect that mothers will endorse nurturance more than self-determination rights at all ages. We will also look at the predictors of endorsement of rights including the centrality of the family, parenting styles, and the age of the child.
