AbstractEnvironmental microbiological risks have emerged as significant non-traditional security threats with profound implications for public health, national resilience, and sustainable development. In Nigeria, rapid urbanisation, inadequate sanitation, unsafe water supplies, poor waste management, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), environmental pollution, recurrent disease outbreaks, and weak environmental surveillance have increased the country's vulnerability to biological hazards. While national security policies have traditionally prioritised terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other conventional threats, comparatively limited attention has been devoted to the security implications of environmental microbiological risks. This study examines the nexus between environmental microbiological risks, national security, and evidence-based social policy in Nigeria. A qualitative documentary research design was adopted, drawing on secondary statistical data and policy documents published between 2021 and 2026 by the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations agencies, the World Bank, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), and other authoritative sources. The findings indicate that environmental microbiological threats—including antimicrobial resistance, waterborne diseases, foodborne pathogens, environmental contamination, and inadequate biosecurity—undermine human security, economic productivity, food systems, healthcare delivery, and social stability. The study argues that environmental microbiology should be recognised as a strategic component of Nigeria's national security architecture and proposes integrated, evidence-based social policy reforms anchored on the One Health approach. It concludes that strengthening environmental surveillance, scientific research, intersectoral collaboration, and preventive social policies will enhance national resilience and contribute to sustainable development
