Navigating the Impact of AI Technology on Professional Identity: A Study of RIM Practitioners in ESARBICA Member States

International audience The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into professional domains presents a dual reality of enhanced efficiency and significant threats to professional identity. This study investigates the impact of AI technology on the professional identity of Records and Information Management (RIM) practitioners within the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ESARBICA) region. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected via an online questionnaire from 451 RIM professionals. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were employed to analyze the data. The findings reveal a landscape defined by a central paradox: a high intention to use AI coexists with significant perceptions of professional identity threat. Key threats identified include loss of status position, loss of autonomy, and loss of controllability, with high standard deviations indicating a profession fractured by a digital divide. Qualitative insights further contextualize these threats, highlighting a "Double Bind" where practitioners feel pressure to adopt AI despite systemic unpreparedness. However, mitigating factors such as Explainable AI (XAI), a positive AI identity, and a strong RIM culture were identified as crucial buffers. The study concludes that the future of RIM in ESARBICA hinges on strategically fostering these mitigators to navigate the transition, advocating for a future built on AI-human collaboration rather than replacement. The findings offer critical insights for professional bodies, policymakers, and organizational leaders.
