Negation in Mankanya

This chapter investigates the field of negation in Mankanya, a Bak language (Atlantic group) spoken in Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and Gambia. The analysis follows the framework developed by Miestamo and Veselinova, which allows to study negation from a typological point of view. Like the other Atlantic languages, Manka\-nya has a very rich verbal morphology, and negation tends to be integrated into the TAM-system. Negation in Mankanya shows two major types of asymmetry: the first one concerns the marking of TAM, and the second concerns the marking of subject. Negation also involves a specific intonation pattern. This chapter provides a systematic study of negation, analysing the correspondences between affirmative and negative clauses, as well as the interaction between TAM and negation.
