Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) constitute a vital component in supporting livelihoods enhancing livelihood sustainability in rural communities of South Sudan, where a significant protection of the population depends on them as sources of income, food, and raw materials.
This paper aims to provide a brief scientific review of the existing literature, analyzing the role of NTFPs in income generation, food security, and their broader contribution to rural economies.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical review approach, drawing on relevant regional and local literature, including academic studies and development reports.
The findings indicate that NTFPs make a substantial contribution to improving rural livelihoods by diversifying income sources and strengthening food security, particularly in economically marginalized areas.
Furth more, these products play a critical role in sustaining rural economies across wide regions of the country.
Despite their importance, the utilization and envelopment of NTFPs face several constraints, including inadequate infrastructure, underdeveloped value chains, price volatility linked to ongoing economic crisis, and limited access to local and regional markets.
The study recommends the integration of NTFPs into sustainable development policies at both national and state levels, with a focus on strengthening value chains, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the capacity of local communities for sustainable resource management.
