Abstract This chapter briefly describes the epidemiology and pathogenesis of and host immune response to trypanosomiasis in man and livestock animals in Africa. The early approaches in developing vaccines against trypanosomiasis, as well as the potential of African wildlife species (mostly considered as reservoirs of trypanosomiasis) as a conduit for the identification of new vaccines are discussed. The results of vaccine trials in mice and cattle are reviewed.
